Autonomous Public Art Workshop, Madrid – 2008/2009 Edition

Pilar López: “Little pieces of paper in the walls”: “Inspired by each ubication, the artists writes short texts in small pieces of paper to insert them into little crannies in the street walls. This project gives voice to the buildings and so reminds us that they live, enjoy, suffer and age together with us. The pieces of paper are left to be found by the pedestrian in a moment of fragile and moving poetry.”

Alejandro Lii: “Poem of a quiet night”: “A series of photographs depicting corners of Madrid city center where people regularly urinate. These serene nocturnal images of unexpected beauty effortessly build an eerie atmosphere.”

Juan de la Rosa: “Untitled”: “A series of night images that succeed at bringing forward both a critique about politics of urban planning and a silent but lyrically strong chorus.”

Elena Gómez: “Garbage”: “Through a simple gesture the artist conveys a statement about the concept of waste and our relationship with the manufactured object.” Mehr auch hier, via: Mail

Aram Bartholl: “Are you human?”

Nerd-Tagging von Aram Bartholl: “CAPTCHA is the acronym for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart” and was developed in 2000 by information scientists at the Carnegie Mellon University, USA. Web-based services such as Yahoo require users to recognize and type a randomly generated series of letters or numbers which appear on the screen as a CAPTCHA image. This test is designed to ensure that a web form is not being completed by the automatic scripts used by spammers. In the classic Turing Test a person distinguishes between a computer and a human. CAPTCHA Codes turn this idea around. Based on the input of a correct or incorrect response, the software decides whether it is dealing with a real person or an automatic script. CAPTCHA Codes are publicly available, and each code is uniquely generated by a computer program which “knows” the correct response, although it can not itself “read” the code.” Via: Mail

Düsseldorfer Bad Bank zensiert

Eine Mail von Farbfieber e.V.: “Die erst im April 2009 in Düsseldorf entstandene Bad Bank des Künstlers Klaus Klinger wurde zensiert!! Hier einige Tatfotos.

Andy Freeberg: “Guardians” / “Sentry”

Die Serien “Guardians” (2008-heute) und “Sentry” (2007) von Andy Freeberg: Unglaublich komische Fotografien von Museumsaufsichten und Schreibtischen in Galerien. “In the art museums of Russia, women sit in the galleries and guard the collections. When you look at the paintings and sculptures, the presence of the women becomes an inherent part of viewing the artwork itself. I found the guards as intriguing to observe as the pieces they watch over. In conversation they told me how much they like being among Russia’s great art. A woman in Moscow’s State Tretyakov Gallery Museum said she often returns there on her day off to sit in front of a painting that reminds her of her childhood home. Another guard travels three hours each way to work, since at home she would just sit on her porch and complain about her illnesses, “as old women do.” She would rather be at the museum enjoying the people watching, surrounded by the history of her country.”

“It was an odd moment when I walked into that first gallery in Chelsea and saw a large white desk with a head poking up from the top edge of the computer screen. I took out my camera, carefully framing and exposing the scene, and the head never moved or took notice of my gaze. As I walked around that booming Chelsea neighborhood of art galleries, I began to notice a trend: at some of the biggest galleries there are giant entry desks, where the top of the head of the desk sitter is often the only other human presence. This leads me to wonder, in this digital world of email and instant messaging that supposedly makes us more connected, are we also setting up barriers to the simple eye to eye contact that affirms our humanity?” Via: Sleek
