I think that all the "environmentally friendly" art bullshit is way over rated. I like this guy more because he isn't all like "Hey guys check me out: I'm cool because my art is made of rubbish and can be put in your compost!".

i dont think this is about stardom this guy is on his shit he's been doing it for many years he may now be making some coin from it all all his work for the blind and his strong political message set apart from anything commercial.

i suggest you take a closer look before getting so uptight

This 'street art' stuff is still really a problem isn't it? Putting aside its real irrelevance in 2008 – I can't help but wish people were driven by actual ideas rather than obtuse chances at fleeting street art stardom. The work and the artists subsequent attempts at trademarking this supposedly new concept, just read as embarrassing efforts at justifying a press release for any of it.

Apparently this guy has since put cups in fences for struggling street-wear brand Mooks, for their decidedly unadventurous campaigns, which comes as no surprise, really. Though, what I grapple with is the idea that the driving force behind 'Street Art' was historically somewhat antagonistic, its driving force was its 'anti-establishment' stance. I wonder what function this genre of graffiti/design/art now serves, what the work currently says (if anything), now that we have found its sole purpose (if not simply vanity) is to partake in the frameworks it still outwardly claims it sets out to fight.

This article I read recently on Japanese website Tokyo Art Beat is actually a nice comment on the subject.

I don't mind his work, it's pretty good - and think he's a nice guy and everything.

But calling it his "brainchild" and coining it "cuprocking" for an art style thats been around for ages - is juvenile. I wonder how much of that is him and how much of it is his sponsors Mooks and Vice mag?

Ive ¨seen Uprocks work around sydney and melbourne for the last five years, regardless of who was first i definitely believe in uprocks vision.
Around early 2004 i was walking in the back alleys of surry hills and saw him put up a piece of poetry in braille for the local blind community ....if that doesnt make you feel in some way better that someone is reaching out to change a part of society then then maybe you should do something yourself.

PEACE

oooooohhh...

it's "the brainchild of andy uprock".

aha.

the 'you are beautiful'-collective has done that in 2003 already, with a positive message instead of the egocentric self portayal like mr. uprock.
(see http://you-are-beautiful.com/INSTALLATIONS/cupfence1.html ).

don't get me wrong, some of the fences look neat, but fuck the attitude, especially when it's been done before, years ago.

ah,
