Friedrich von Borries: “ProblemZonenGymnastik #1 – Equipment”

“Fit für die Verteilungskämpfe des 21. Jahrhunderts?”, fragt der Berliner Architekt und Kurator Friedrich von Borries in seiner neuen Webserie “ProblemZonenGymnastik” für ARTE Creative. “Im 21. Jahrhundert ist nicht mehr genug für alle da. Arbeit, Essen, Energie: Alles wird knapp. Ideale Bedingungen für den Kapitalismus und sein Überlebensprinzip: Survival of the Fittest. Aber sind wir dafür schon bereit? Sind wir wirklich fit? Denn die Verteilungskämpfe um die knappen Ressourcen erfordern neue Kompetenzen und Werkzeuge. Deshalb stellt Friedrich von Borries innovative Projekte aus Kunst, Design und Architektur vor, mit denen sich jeder fit machen kann. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die Problemzonen des urbanen Alltags – nicht Bauch Beine Po, sondern Wohnen, Mobilität und Ernährung.” Und los geht es mit dem richtigen “Equipment”: “In der ersten Folge von ProblemZonenGymnastik stattet der Designer Michael Michalsky Friedrich von Borries mit einem zeitgemäßen Trainingsanzug für den urbanen Verteilungskampf aus – Camouflage trifft auf Seide, Wohlfühlfaktor auf Kampfbereitschaft.” Und hier gibt´s auch noch den Song zur Serie: Matthias Grübel feat. * CrowdCulture – spannendes Konzept zur Kulturförderung aus Schweden: “If we were to create a city today – what would the financial system for cultural productions look like? In Sweden, they have asked the question and come up with the crowdsourcing model Crowdculture. Crowdculture is an online platform that allows people to create, select and fund cultural activities in Stockholm. To participate, people have to sign up and ‘invest’ 50 SEK (6 €) per month. Each individual investment is then leveraged by public funds.” Via

* Tiefdruckgebiet – a heavylistening experience: “Eine außergewöhnliche, körperliche Konzert-Erfahrung: Zwölf mit Subwoofern ausgestattete Autos fahren durch die Straßen Neuköllns und erzeugen dabei ein wanderndes Wellenfeld sich gegenseitig modulierender Subbass-Schwingungen. Jedes Auto entspricht einem Instrument, sein Fahrer dem Instrumentalisten. Die über die Subwoofer abgespielten tieffrequenten Klänge sind reine Sinustöne, die einfachsten vorstellbaren Schwingungen. * FoodMatch, ein Projekt des Secret Cooks Club of Singapore, die u.a. Underground-Restaurants und andere Food-Events organisieren: “The single portions of food at the supermarket are a strange business entity. The skimpy, perfect packaging directly links with the little windows of the huge buildings of one-room flats that are filling up all the big cities. Through the project FoodMatch the group calls people to share their leftovers with other lonely metropolitan inhabitants. Thanks to this facebook app, you can share information and upload pictures that describe the ingredients in the fridge. It’s then possible to fix a place and a date for a real dinner. Anyone can join and add foods that will be used to make delicious recipes (obtained automatically through Google API) and eaten in the company of real diners. Inspiration Day for Art and Communication / Oddstream Festival Nijmegen

Musik (Chicks on Speed, Alec Empire, T. Raumschmiere, zZz etc.), Medienkunst und die volle Dröhnung Inspiration. Am 2. Juni beginnt das Oddstream Festival in Nijmegen, und am 3. Juni findet der “Inspiration Day for Art and Communication” statt – u.a. mit diesem Programm:

10.00-10.10: Welcome speech from chairman Oliver Vodeb/Memefest
10.15-10.45: Jason Grant is director of graphic design studio Inkahoots that hustles for social change as a visually adventurous graphic design practice. Jason has studied Fine Art and Design, and taught Typography, Design and Art Theory. He speaks at numerous national and international design conferences and universities. Lecture: “Design is Dialogue”
11.00-11.30: Sandy Kaltenborn is graphic designer and owner of studio Image-Shift that works primarily in social, political and cultural context. He studied Graphic Arts in the USA and later Communication Design in Berlin. Lecture: “Design is not enough; visual communication and other misunderstandings.”
12.00-12.30: Alain Bieber studied Rhetorics, Sociology, Literature and Political Science in Tübingen and Paris. He works as a art critic, blogger, project manager and curator in Strasbourg. In 2004 he founded REBEL:ART, a platform for art, culture and politics. Lecture: “Art and Agenda; towards a new artistic and political discourse.”
12.45-13.15: Paulo Hartmann is a multi-skilled designer, artist, musician and independent researcher, graduated in Marketing and Advertising. He is creator and organizer of Mobilefest, an international festival for mobile creativity. He aims to connect art and music with new technologies and communication. Lecture: “Brazil collectives scene: from unplugged to hyper-connected. A temp cartography of urban interventions and performances towards reconquest public space and life.”
14.15-14.45: Tony Credland is organizer of the mail-art magazine Cactus Network. He graduated from Portsmouth University and later studied at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. He works as a print-based graphic designer and is teaching the MA in Graphic Design at Londen College of Communication. Lecture: “Networks of Autonomy; opening up spaces for critical engagement.”
15.00-15.30: Shoaib Nabi is Associate Professor of Design at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, where he teaches students how to develop original and creative concepts and solutions and supports open communication and exchange of ideas. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and worked for Microsoft as a Multimedia Graphic Designer. Lecture: “The emerging realities of Middle-East and South-East Asia; how knowledge does not need to be disseminated in a particular way.”

Rajeev Basu: “EEP EEP EEP EP”

Woop, woop, that’s the sound of da police: Für “EEP EEP EEP EP” hat der britische Künstler Rajeev Basu ein Konzeptalbum komponiert, dass komplett nur aus Alarmtönen besteht. “It’s a global interactive music-arts experiment to see if it’s possible to turn one of society’s most despised sounds, the sounds of alarms, into music that people might actually enjoy. We’ve all had that car alarm outside that just won’t stop. It kicked off with the launch of EEP EEP EEP EP. A concept album made entirely using alarms. I collaborated with some of the world’s top sound designers on this, like Malcolm Goldie (London), David Kamp (Berlin), Dominic Matar (NY) and Michael Manning (London). The results are surprisingly good. Who thought they’d ever sit back and relax to the sounds of police sirens mixed with car alarms and fire alarms. For the interactive part – I’ve made the alarms they used to make the album, available to download by anyone, to try and make their own track. I’ll create a 1 of 1 original track-artwork inspired by every entry. And the best three will be turned into sound sculpture installations to exhibit in 2012.

Klang-Graffiti: Sound Tossing

“Ich arbeite gerade an einem Street-Art Projekt genannt Sound Tossing”, schreibt Reinhard (aka Soundfiti). “Das Projekt Sound Tossing beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung einer alternativen Form von Street Art, bei der hauptsächlich mit Klang als subversivem Medium Interventionen im urbanen Raum unternommen werden. In Anlehnung an Shoe Tossing/Shoefiti, das sich alter Schuhe bedient transformiert das Vorhaben gebrauchte Lautsprecherpaare und elektronische Bauelemente zu Werkzeugen der Klangintervention im öffentlichen Raum. / Sound Tossing is an alternative type of electronic street art dedicated to activist, artist and protesters. It is the practice of throwing or hanging audio devices (Sound Tossing Tools) up to overhead wires such as power lines or telephone cables. Beastie Boys: Fight For Your Right (Revisited)

Die Beastie Boys sind back: Aber noch besser als deren neues Album “Hot Sauce Committee Part Two”, so die SZ, ist der “ebenso irritierende wie großartige Kurzfilm, den Adam Yauch, unter dem Namen “MCA” besser bekannt als einer er drei New Yorker Beastie Boys, geschrieben, gedreht und vor einigen Tagen ins Netz gestellt hat.” Der Film knüpft an das legendäre Musikvideo “Fight for Your Right to Party!” und mit dabei ist fast die gesamte Hollywoodstar-Liga, von Elijah Wood, Will Ferrell, Danny McBride, John C. Reilly, Seth Rogen, Jack Black, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, David Cross, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Jason Schwartzman, Adam Scott, Rainn Wilson, Steve Buscemi, Chloë Sevigny, Alicia Silverstone, Martin Starr, Ted Danson, Rashida Jones bis R.E.M.’s Mike Mills. “Anstatt ihren Mythos durch neue musikalische Ambition in Gefahr zu bringen, verlegen sich die Beastie Boys darauf, ihren eigenen Mythos vom Regiesessel aus zu dirigieren und mit ihrem Status als Ikonen der Achtziger in Hollywood zu wuchern”, schreibt Jan Kedves. “Den diebischen Spaß, den sie selbst an “Hot Sauce Committee Part Two” offenbar nicht hatten, gönnen sie im Film jenen Stars, von denen sie sich darstellen lassen. Szigeti G. Csongor: “Horn Blow”

Fantastisches Projekt des ungarischen Multimedia-Künstlers Szigeti G. Csongor in Indien: “Horn Blow” ist eine Art “Autohupen-Piano”. “
Car horns are a key traffic communication device in India.
I was shocked by the sound of them at first, but I slowly got used to them. I could hear many types of horns, and I started to envisage them as some kind of experimental music that went on in the streets. In addition I could see that most of the people enjoyed blowing their car’s horns, doing it naturally, sometimes playing the horns for the sake of it. I felt the desire to take part in this strange communication game and I decided to create a device that would control different horn sounds. By using this device me or anybody else could compose his/her own improvisation or horn sound composition. Additionally they could interact with the traffic and people in the streets.” Via: Mail, thx!

Save the date: Oddstream Festival – 31.5 bis 5.6, Nijmegen, NL

Nijmegen in den Niederlanden? Bis vor kurzem hatte ich auch noch nie von dieser Stadt und diesem Festival gehört. Aber Oliver von Memefest hat mir davon erzählt und mich eingeladen und ja, es soll richtig genial werden und deshalb hänge ich bald ein paar Tage in Nijmegen ab. Zum Hintergrund: Oddstream ist ein “festival for participation, communication and multimedia” und Memefest, das “international festival for radical communication”, wird dort die Gewinner des Beyond-Awards (bei der ich Co-Kurator bin) vorstellen und einen Workshop organisieren, bei dem es darum geht: “Mapping possibilities of socially responsive communication and the difference between such communications to (social) marketing.” Außerdem gibt es Vorträge, Filme, eine Ausstellung und eine großen Musikprogramm, u.a. mit zZz, Alec Empire, T.Raumschmiere, Chicks on Speed. Also: Wir sehen uns Anfang Juni in Nijmegen!

Craig Colorusso: “Sun Boxes”

Sound-Installation von Craig Colorusso: “Sun Boxes are an environment to enter and exit at will. It’s comprised of twenty speakers operating independently, each powered by the sun via solar panels. There is a different loop set to play a guitar note in each box continuously. These guitar notes collectively make a Bb chord. Because the loops are different in length, once the piece begins they continually overlap and the piece slowly evolves over time. The sounds of Sun Boxes have been described as both soothing and energizing. A unique combination of adjectives often used to describe yoga, or meditation. When experiencing the piece, Sun Boxes allows the participant to slow down, and notice the subtleties of the composition unfold. With the abundance of technology and hustle of this culture it is a much needed concept to not only be allowed, but also encouraged to slow down.”
